In order to save his people he began a retreat. He

Chief Joseph was born a member of the Nez Perce tribe
of Wallowa Valley,Oregon in 1840. His Nez Perce name was
Hin-mah-too-yah-lat-kekt which means Thunder Rolling Down the
Mountain. Young Joseph was the son of Joseph the Elder, the local
chief. He grew up close friends with his brother Ollokot.
